Product Development Chemist
Under the supervision of the Materials and Product Development Leader, the Product Development Chemist is expected to develop new products to grow CertainTeed's siding business. This individual will have product responsibility, which includes: developing the product formulation, scale-up to manufacturing process, solve problems in the plants and make continuous improvements.


The Product Development Chemist is expected to use fundamental scientific principles, along with the latest research and methods, to reduce risk and ensure a successful product launch.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES


Concept development and innovation




+ The chemist or chemical engineer must be familiar with the construction industry and trends to be able to create concepts for new products or useful features for existing products.



+ Ability to understand competitor's products using benchmarking, patents, and testing.



+ Interpret competitive patents and identify opportunities for product development.



+ Demonstrate the ability to develop new materials through product formulation.



Formulation




+ Ability to work in the laboratory safely and handle hazardous materials.



+ Maintain awareness with industry trends and maintain contact with raw material suppliers.



+ Study changes to a product formulation and understand its impact on the product performance.



+ Perform sensitivity studies (or DOEs) to understand the effect of a formulation changes.



+ Utilize prior literature research to direct efforts in product development and experiments.



+ Document and present results to leadership to gain approval for the product launch.



Product Responsibility and Launch




+ Prepare project plans, timelines, and presentations to coordinate activities from the project team.



+ Identify key characteristics and develop the appropriate methods for QC testing.



+ Develop specifications for the raw materials to ensure that product quality is maintained.



+ Maintain responsibility of the formulation and advise the plant of proper tolerances and controls.



+ Communicate to the plant recommendations for the shelf-life, labeling, storage conditions.



+ Partner with the process team to use proven techniques to minimize product variation.



+ Ensure that the process is safe for operators and that all environmental regulations are met.



+ Ensure that the product meets all industry standard requirements through testing.



+ Perform final product tests to gain final leadership approval for performance, aesthetics, and warranty approval.



Continuous improvement




+ Properly document results and lessons learned for future use.



+ Develop and implement solutions for future quality improvements and cost reduction.



+ Promote a safe working environment by through policies, practices and equipment.



The Product Development Chemist will work under the parameters as defined by CertainTeed, local, state, and government policies and procedures. The incumbent's responsibilities include the expectation to develop and implement new innovative systems, and to create continuity between departments. He/She will support and carry out the general objectives and goals of the Siding Products Group Research & Development Center and must perform as a self-directed employee referring decisions of large magnitude to the Materials & Product Development Leader.


The Product Development Chemist is expected understand the objectives of the business, develop plans, and execute those plans to bring a new product to commercialization. He/She must balance the need for speed to market for the new product, while being thorough and properly following the product development process. The incumbent is also expected to work safely at all times and promote a safe working environment for others.









+ Master of Science in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or a Bachelor of Science degree with at least 3 years of relevant industry experience



+ Experience in polymer chemistry, polyolefins, polyurethane, or PVC formulation experience, is a plus.



+ Must possess the ability to:





+ understand new concepts quickly



+ determine the appropriate approach



+ organize, schedule, and coordinate work



+ communicate results effectively





+ Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Project, and PowerPoint.



+ Knowledge and hands-on experience using analytical lab equipment (FTIR, DMA, TGA, DSC, others).



+ Proficient in statistical analysis of data (MiniTab or equivalent).



+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.



+ Self-motivated and hands-on.



+ Strong attention to detail and can work independently or as part of a team.



The physical demands of the work may require the ability to move heavy objects safely, not to exceed 60 pounds, with the assistance of a dolly, forklift, or team member. There are also frequent and prolonged periods of standing/walking and pushing/pulling or moving/lifting supplies. The incumbent may experience frequent/occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. It may also require normal range of hearing and vision to operate machinery.


This position is located within R&D facility and would involve strong interaction with manufacturing plants (for material trials, product development etc.) potentially require the incumbent to have exposure to noise, dust, and hazards associated with manufacturing equipment and tools. The incumbent is required to comply with all safety requirements, including use of the personal protection equipment required for this position. The incumbent must have possession of or ability to obtain licensure for a motor vehicle.


The Product Development Chemist will be required to travel as needed to attend training, seminars, CertainTeed functions.
